How much does AI training for employees cost in Chicago? (2026)
In shortA 2–3 hour hands-on AI workshop for up to about 15 people typically costs from about $2,500 with 312 IT Consulting in Chicago. The 1-Day Foundations and 2-Day Hands-On programs, and policy or prompt-library work, are quoted in writing after a free first call; the biggest driver is how far the training is tailored to your company. Third-party benchmarks for private half-day team workshops run $3,000–$15,000.

What 312 IT Consulting charges for AI training
We publish our typical ranges because most providers don’t. These are typical prices, not quotes: every engagement gets a written scope and quote before work starts.
| Engagement | Typical timeline | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Workshop one group, up to about 15 people, on-site in Chicago or live online; the core of Day 1 with a short “your turn” after each topic | 2–3 hours | From about $2,500 |
| 1-Day Foundations all of Day 1: how AI works, tokens and context, prompting, checking the work and privacy, working from your own material | 1 day, 10:00–3:00 | Quoted in writing after a free first call |
| 2-Day Hands-On (recommended) Day 1 plus a second day built around your company: reusable workflows and three labs on your own processes, tailored to your roles and industry | 2 days, 10:00–3:00 | Quoted in writing after a free first call |
| Policy and prompt library AI acceptable-use policy drafted with leadership, shared prompt library, follow-up session | 1–4 weeks | Quoted in writing |
Typical prices, not quotes. Timelines are estimates and subject to change based on scope.
We price per group, not per seat, because everyone in the room is working on the same business’s tasks. The full curriculum — Day 1 Foundations, Day 2 Applied and the three formats — is on our page for AI training for Chicago teams.
What drives the price of AI training
The biggest driver is how far you want the training tailored to your company. The standard curriculum runs on your team’s own tools as it is. Day 2 of the 2-Day program is built around your own use cases — content and labs tailored to the roles in the room (estimators, account managers, office and payroll staff, sales, operations, leadership) and to your industry, on your real processes with fictional practice data — and fully custom workflows and saved instructions built for your business go further still. “How tailored do you want it?” is the question the first free call answers.
- How tailored you want itthe biggest driver: standard curriculum → role-specific labs on your processes → fully custom workflows and saved instructions
- Format and daysa 2–3 hour workshop, 1-Day Foundations or 2-Day Hands-On
- Group size and number of groupsup to ~15 per group keeps it hands-on; larger teams split into more groups
- On-site vs. virtualon-site in Chicago and the North Shore adds travel and setup; follow-ups run well online
- Policy workdrafting an AI acceptable-use policy with leadership is separate from the sessions
- Prompt libraryturning the saved instructions from the labs into a shared, owned library with a follow-up review
What does not change the price: which tool you use. We train on ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Claude or Google Gemini at the same rate. If you are on Microsoft 365, our Microsoft Copilot guide covers the licence cost you would add on top (Copilot is $30 per user per month at the time of writing).

| Format | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Self-paced course, per seat | $49 per month on Coursera, under 5 hours, certificate from Google | Grow with Google, Google AI Essentials |
| Public instructor-led class, per seat | Applied AI Workshop, 4 hours: $1,630 online / $2,230 classroom (Chicago dates listed for 2027) | NobleProg Chicago catalog |
| Mentor-led small session | Two-hour session from $250; half-day from $500; full-day from $900 | MentorCruise, September 2026 |
| Private team half-day (up to ~25) | $3,000–$8,000 (generic to custom); full day $6,000–$15,000 | Greenway Tech Education, May 2026 |
| Private team half-day (15–30) | $8,000–$15,000; full day with custom tool integration $15,000–$25,000 | SVSB workshop pricing, July 2026 |
| Premium national programs | Team workshop $5,000–$50,000 (15–30 people); $200–$2,500 per person across a full rollout | Teamland, July 2026 |
| Virtual team workshop | From $5,000 (5–30 attendees); function-specific deep dive from $25,000; in-person quoted on a call | AI Scale Labs workshops page |
| AI consultant hourly rate | Freelance $75–$150/hr; boutique firm $125–$250/hr; enterprise firm $250–$500/hr | Layer3 Labs, updated October 2026 |
Read across the rows and a pattern appears: public classes are cheap per seat but generic, private team workshops run $3,000–$15,000 per half-day, and premium programs charge for brand and scale. A from-about-$2,500 workshop sits at the low end of the private-team band because it is one trainer, one room, one role group and no slide deck sold twice.
On hourly rates: we don’t bill AI training by the hour. A workshop quote covers the prep call, the session and the materials, so a $125-an-hour rate and a $250-an-hour rate tell you nothing about what the engagement will cost. Ask for the total.
Illinois ETIP: up to 50% of eligible training costs
For an eligible Illinois employer, the state’s ETIP program can reimburse up to half of the training fee after the quarter closes. We don’t publish worked dollar examples: approval is the Chamber’s decision, not ours, and reimbursement is not guaranteed.
The Employer Training Investment Program is funded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and administered in Chicagoland by the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. It reimburses up to 50% of eligible training costs for full-time, Illinois-based employees. Conditions that matter for a workshop: submit a Training Pre-Approval Request before any training starts, have two or more trainees, and make sure a certificate of completion is issued (workshops and seminars are otherwise excluded). Consulting fees and travel are not reimbursable, so policy consulting should be quoted as a separate line from the training.
Confirm eligibility and pre-approval before booking; ETIP is first come, first served and reimbursement is not guaranteed.
The full decision tree — ETIP, the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, the apprenticeship tax credit and free vendor courses — is in our guide to grants and reimbursements for AI training in Illinois.
Is AI training worth it in 2026?
Three 2026 surveys say the same thing from different angles: people are already using AI at work, they want to get better at it, and most employers haven’t shown them how.
| Survey | Finding |
|---|---|
| JFF, 2026 survey (fielded Nov 28–Dec 8, 2025; 3,020 respondents) | 36% of workers feel they have the training to use AI, down from 45% a year earlier |
| PwC, 2026 Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey (49,364 workers, 48 countries) | 51% say they can access the learning and development they need, down from 59% |
| Workera, 2026 AI Workforce Preview (1,000 US full-time, degree-holding workers; Dec 2025) | 76% plan to learn new AI skills in 2026 |
The gap between those numbers is the business case. Staff who want to use AI and aren’t trained will use it anyway — on personal accounts, with customer data, with no one checking the output. That is the shadow IT problem with a chatbot attached, and a written AI acceptable-use policy plus a few hours of hands-on practice is the cheapest fix we know.
Measure it on your own work
We don’t publish payback arithmetic or client outcome statistics. Pick two or three of your own workflows before the training, note how they are done today, and measure them yourself a few weeks after — and treat any provider’s “hours saved” claim as a claim until you have measured it on your own work.
Where it is not worth it: a one-off “AI awareness” talk with no hands-on work, no policy and no follow-up. People leave entertained and change nothing. If budget only covers one thing, make it a hands-on workshop for the role group with the most repetitive writing.
How to compare AI training quotes
Eight questions to put to any provider, including us. The answers tell you more than the price.
- Is it hands-on, on our tasks? Ask what share of the session people spend working on their own laptops versus watching a demo, and whether the trainer collects real tasks from your team beforehand.
- What is the maximum group size? Past about 15 people a workshop turns into a lecture. A low price for 40 people is not a bargain.
- Is the price per workshop, per person or per hour? Convert everything to a total for your headcount before comparing.
- What exactly is included? Prep call, session, materials, the prompts built in the room, a certificate of completion, a follow-up. Policy drafting and prompt libraries are usually extra; check whether they are quoted separately.
- Which tools, and on whose accounts? Training on your own ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude or Gemini accounts means the habits stick. Training on the trainer’s demo account does not.
- Does it cover data rules? If the session doesn’t say what must never be pasted into a chatbot, it isn’t finished. In Illinois, that includes biometric and voice data under BIPA; see our BIPA guide.
- Will they issue a certificate of completion and an itemized invoice? Both are conditions for ETIP reimbursement, and a provider who can’t produce them costs you up to half the fee.
- Who is teaching, and do they build with these tools? Ask what the trainer has shipped. Our own answer is the software products we design, build and run ourselves, listed on our products page.
FAQ
AI training cost questions, answered.
How much does AI training cost per employee?
With 312 IT Consulting, a 2–3 hour on-site workshop for up to about 15 people typically starts from about $2,500, priced per group rather than per seat; the 1-Day Foundations and 2-Day Hands-On programs are quoted in writing after a free first call. Public per-seat classes in Chicago list anywhere from $49 for a self-paced course to $1,630–$2,230 for a four-hour instructor-led class per attendee.
Do you charge an hourly rate for AI training?
No. We price per workshop or per engagement, with a written scope and quote before work starts, so you know the total up front. For reference, third-party guides put freelance AI consultants at $75–$150 per hour, boutique firms at $125–$250 and large firms at $250–$500 (Layer3 Labs, updated October 2026).
What is included in the from-about-$2,500 workshop?
A pre-workshop call to collect real tasks from the group, a 2–3 hour hands-on session for one group of up to about 15 people on your own tools and accounts, the prompts the group built during the session, and a certificate of completion for each attendee. The 1-Day Foundations and 2-Day Hands-On programs, policy drafting and a prompt library are quoted separately in writing.
Is on-site AI training more expensive than virtual?
Usually a little, because of travel time and setup, but within Chicago and the North Shore the difference is small and we quote it in writing. For a first workshop we recommend on-site: people try things on their own laptops and ask the questions they would not type into a chat.
Can Illinois reimburse part of the cost of AI training?
Possibly. The Employer Training Investment Program (ETIP), funded by DCEO and administered in Chicagoland by the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, reimburses up to 50% of eligible training costs for full-time Illinois-based employees. Training must be pre-approved before it starts, have two or more trainees, and workshops need a certificate of completion. Confirm eligibility and pre-approval before booking.
Is AI training worth it in 2026?
It depends on whether the training is hands-on and on real work. 2026 surveys show the gap: only 36% of workers say they have the training to use AI (JFF), only 51% say they can access the learning they need (PwC), yet 76% plan to learn new AI skills this year (Workera). We don't publish payback math or client outcome statistics; pick two or three of your own workflows, note how they are done today, and measure them yourself a few weeks after the training.
